Avinash Kaushik & His Awesome Google Plus Updates

When it comes to writing updates in Google+, some of the most influential people use the following formula to make their posts stand out:

(Title in bold) + (3 to 4 short paragraphs) + #hashtag + URL + Picture = Awesome Update

The inspiration of this post comes from Avinash Kaushik. I’m sure we’ve all taken a gander at a page or two of his books on analytics, but this is a simple style we can all emulate. Also, he’s a great person to circle on Google+ because his posts are always thought provoking and extremely organized. Check out this Google+ post example:

Avinash creates his post title by bolding the text. Google+ allows you to format text in the following ways:

  • Bold: *add the star symbol around text to make it appear bold*
  • Italic: _add underscores around the text to make it appear italicized_
  • Strikethrough: -add the minus symbol around the text to make it appear strikethrough-

Three to four short paragraphs elaborate his title. Updates with longer explanations and developed ideas tend to receive more shares and comments compared to shorter updates.

Avinash uses pictures and links simultaneously in the post. If you make Google+ updates for business pages, this is an awesome strategy to display products or images from web pages because pictures generally take up more room in the Google+ newsfeed than links with thumbnails and meta descriptions. Also, posts with pictures tend to “live longer” because description and links are tied to the images, which people can continue to access from the profile photo library.

#OMG, before you publish your post, don’t forget to throw in a hashtag. Hashtags work just like they do in Twitter, adding a hashtag for the subject can help the update reach a wider audience.
